Worldwide protests on Gaza continue

About 40,000 people marched in Oslo against the violence in Gaza

International condemnation of Israel's two week assault on Gaza has continued, with tens of thousands of protesters calling for end to the military offensive.

In Norway on Thursday, at least 40,000 people marched in the capital Oslo, as well as in five other cities, in a protest called by an alliance of about 80 organisations.

UN passes Gaza ceasefire resolution

Arab delegates pushed for the vote to be held quickly, objecting to a further 24-hour delay [AFP]

The UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza that Arab nations hope will put an end to Israel's 14-day assault on the territory.

The resolution, passed by the 15-member body on Thursday with 14 votes in favour and the US abstaining, "stresses the urgency of and calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza".
